Energy and critical infrastructure

NIS2 obligations and the continuity of essential services.

Context

Energy companies, grid operators and utilities run systems society depends on. AI can support operations and planning, provided it strengthens rather than weakens resilience and control.

Key regulation

Framework Relevance
NIS2 Energy is a sector of high criticality. In the Netherlands, the Cyberbeveiligingswet applies from 15 August 2026.
Critical entities resilience The Dutch Wet weerbaarheid kritieke entiteiten applies from the same date.
EU AI Act AI used as a safety component in critical infrastructure is high-risk, with obligations from 2 December 2027.

Challenges and opportunities

Challenges

  • Continuity AI dependencies must not introduce new single points of failure.
  • Supply-chain security Models and providers fall within supply-chain security duties.
  • Operational separation Operational technology environments require strict isolation.

Opportunities

  • Maintenance knowledge Access to manuals, procedures and maintenance history in one place.
  • Planning analysis Support for grid and capacity planning with internal data.
  • Incident reporting Faster preparation of incident and compliance reports.

Discuss the priorities in energy and critical infrastructure.
